Kenya is mourning the loss of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who passed away on Sunday at Nairobi Hospital after battling an undisclosed illness. The 58-year-old lawmaker, a seasoned politician and public servant, leaves behind a legacy of dedicated leadership and service to his constituents.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki led the nation in mourning Cheptumo, describing him as a dignified and professional leader who was always measured in his words and actions. “Amiable, professional, and calm, Senator Cheptumo brought out the best attributes expected of a cultured lawyer and public officer,” Kindiki said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Cheptumo had an illustrious political career, serving as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North for two terms before being elected as Baringo Senator in the 2022 General Election. Over the years, he held key leadership positions, including Assistant Minister, Chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in the National Assembly, and Chair of the National Security Committee in the Senate. He played a pivotal role in legislative processes and national security matters, particularly in the fight against cattle rustling.
Kindiki acknowledged Cheptumo’s relentless efforts in advocating for peace and cohesion in the country. “He worked hard all the time he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North and later as a Senator. He gave quality representation to his constituents,” he said.
The Chair of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), Eliud Kinuthia, praised Cheptumo for his dedication to improving the welfare of police officers and spearheading reforms in the National Police Service. “His contributions to the security sector and the nation at large will be greatly missed. The security sector has indeed lost a remarkable leader,” Kinuthia stated.
Cheptumo’s colleagues in Parliament also paid tribute to his commitment to justice and development. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah described him as a selfless leader who tirelessly championed the rights of his people. “Having had the honor of serving alongside him in the 11th and 12th Parliament, I witnessed firsthand his integrity, humility, and tireless efforts,” Ichung’wah said.
As Kenyans come to terms with the loss, Cheptumo’s legacy as a statesman, peacemaker, and advocate for justice will be remembered. His passing is not just a loss for Baringo County but for the entire nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
