Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni recently met with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) party leader and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo to strategize and consolidate support for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s anticipated presidential bid. The meeting underscores growing efforts to rally political parties and grassroots support behind Matiang’i, who is widely viewed as a potential challenger to President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Kioni revealed that at least 20 political parties have intensified consultations to build a coalition in support of Matiang’i, even before his formal declaration of candidacy. Speaking to The Star, Kioni expressed optimism about Matiang’i’s prospects, citing increasing goodwill and a favorable political climate. “The political climate is encouraging, and we have agreed to continue holding weekly consultations while broadening our engagements to strengthen support for Matiang’i,” he said.
The former Ndaragwa MP emphasized the importance of grassroots mobilization as a key strategy for the movement. He urged each participating party to actively build its support base and establish a national presence to ensure widespread backing for Matiang’i’s bid. This approach highlights the coalition’s focus on inclusivity and bottom-up engagement, which could prove crucial in a highly competitive electoral landscape.
Although Matiang’i has yet to officially announce his candidacy, pressure is mounting on him to enter the race. His supporters point to his impressive track record in public service, particularly during his tenure as Cabinet Secretary under retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, as evidence of his capability to lead the nation. Matiang’i’s reputation for efficiency and no-nonsense leadership, especially in the security docket, has earned him respect across political divides.
The meeting between Kioni and Nyaribo signals a growing momentum behind Matiang’i’s potential candidacy. With UPA’s historical association with Matiang’i and its influence in key regions, the alliance could significantly bolster his campaign. As consultations continue and more parties join the movement, the political landscape is set to heat up, with Matiang’i emerging as a formidable contender in the race to State House.
