Kisii’s political and professional leadership convened an urgent meeting in Nairobi on Monday to deliberate on key issues affecting the region. The meeting, organized by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, brought together lawmakers from both the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the wake of a political pact that has sparked mixed reactions across the region.
A major concern during the meeting was raised by South Mugirango MP and National Assembly Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro, who expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as the marginalization of the community in ongoing political realignments. Osoro cited the hostile reception given to ODM leader Raila Odinga at Gusii Stadium on Sunday as a clear indication of the community’s discontent with the unfolding political landscape.
According to Osoro, the incident sent a strong political message that the Gusii region would not support any political deals that overlook their interests. He warned that any attempts to sideline Kisii leaders in national politics would not be taken lightly.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, who also spoke at the meeting, distanced himself from the disruptions at Gusii Stadium. He strongly denied allegations that he had sponsored the rowdy youth who heckled and disrupted Odinga’s meeting. Onyonka clarified that while he often criticizes national government policies, he has never been “anti-government.” He further urged for unity among Kisii leaders to ensure that the region’s interests are well represented in national politics.
The meeting also saw sharp differences emerge over the performance of the Kenya Kwanza government, with leaders citing ongoing tensions caused by the Kisii-Transmara border dispute. They called on the government to provide an urgent and long-lasting solution to the persistent conflict, which has led to rising insecurity in the region.
Kisii County has historically been considered a stronghold for Raila Odinga, with overwhelming support in past elections. However, the recent events indicate shifting political dynamics that could reshape the region’s political future. As leaders continue to engage in negotiations, the focus remains on ensuring that Kisii’s voice is heard and that its political and economic interests are safeguarded in the evolving national discourse.
