The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has stated that there is no evidence indicating that the killer of a patient who was receiving treatment at the facility was from outside. This follows a tragic incident where a patient was found dead with a cut wound on the neck.
In a statement issued on Sunday, KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr. William Sigilai confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took charge of the case immediately after hospital staff reported the discovery.
Tragic Discovery During Routine Check
The shocking incident was uncovered during a routine ward round at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday morning. A nurse conducting the rounds found the patient, Mr. Kinyua, lying motionless with his face covered by a blood-stained sheet. Upon removing the sheet, the nurse discovered a deep cut wound on his neck and immediately raised the alarm.
Security personnel, attending doctors, and hospital management were swiftly notified, and the area was immediately cordoned off as a crime scene. The DCI arrived at the scene promptly to commence investigations.
Security Tightened as Investigations Continue
Dr. Sigilai assured the public that security at the hospital has been reinforced to ensure the safety of all patients, staff, and visitors. He emphasized that, at this stage, there is no evidence to suggest that an outsider entered the hospital to commit the crime.
“The DCI has taken full charge of the investigation, but at this point, there is no evidence that anyone walked in and committed the crime,” Sigilai stated. “The hospital is fully cooperating with authorities as investigations into this unfortunate incident continue.”
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death and further aid the ongoing investigations.
Commitment to Transparency and Support for the Family
KNH has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability as the investigation unfolds. The hospital has urged the public to allow authorities to conduct their work without interference and to avoid speculation that may cause further distress to the victim’s family.
Recognizing the trauma faced by the bereaved family, KNH has mobilized a team of psychologists and counselors to offer psychosocial support. A 24-hour helpline has been established to provide continuous assistance. Additionally, a second counseling session was held with an extended group of family members to help them cope with the tragic loss.
Ensuring Safety and Preventing Future Incidents
The KNH management has assured the public that all necessary measures are being put in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
“The KNH management is deeply saddened by this tragic event and remains committed to ensuring the safety of all patients and staff,” Dr. Sigilai affirmed.
As investigations continue, the hospital remains focused on providing quality healthcare while reinforcing security measures to safeguard its patients and personnel.
