The Machakos County Assembly has temporarily suspended its sittings following violent confrontations between Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from opposing factions. The chaos erupted during a House Business Committee meeting, where a group of MCAs attempted to introduce a fresh motion to impeach Speaker Anne Kiusya
The tension began in the morning when the House Business Committee, led by Speaker Kiusya, convened to plan the Assembly’s agenda after recess. However, the meeting was abruptly disrupted by a faction of MCAs allegedly seeking to oust the Speaker. Witnesses reported shouting matches and physical altercations between the majority side, led by Machakos Central MCA Nicholas Nzioka, and the minority side, led by Mua MCA Francis Ngunga.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting intervention from officers at the Machakos Police Station to restore order. Police were seen separating the warring MCAs as tempers flared inside the assembly chamber
Sources indicate that the clashes were linked to a renewed push to impeach Speaker Kiusya, who has faced previous attempts to remove her from office. The opposing faction accuses her of bias and mishandling of assembly affairs, allegations she has denied in the past.
The latest chaos highlights deep divisions within the assembly, with political rivalries threatening to derail legislative business. The suspension of sittings has raised concerns about delayed service delivery and pending bills affecting county operations.
County officials have called for calm, urging MCAs to resolve their differences through dialogue. Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for unity to ensure smooth county operations.
As investigations into the altercation continue, residents are left questioning whether the assembly can overcome its internal conflicts and refocus on its mandate. For now, all eyes remain on whether Speaker Kiusya will survive another impeachment attempt or if the political turmoil will deepen.
