A group of Machakos County Assembly Members (MCAs) have vowed to thwart any impeachment attempt against Speaker Ann Kiusya, claiming that the move is politically motivated and aimed at frustrating her commitment to accountability.
Speaking outside the assembly on Wednesday, 22 MCAs, mostly from the minority side, declared their unwavering support for Kiusya, dismissing the impeachment motion as an unfair scheme driven by vested interests. They argued that Kiusya’s hard stance on oversight had made her a target of certain forces opposed to transparency and good governance.
“We are not ready to eat monies that are supposed to buy medicine for cancer patients as well as provide dialysis services to patients in need. We stand with our speaker, and she is equal to the task,” said Mwala MCA Brian Kisila.
The legislators insisted they had the numbers to defeat the motion, highlighting that with 59 MCAs in the assembly, the proponents of the ouster would need at least 45 votes (75%) to succeed—an impossible feat, according to them.
“We are 59 MCAs at the Machakos County Assembly, and they require 75 per cent, that’s at least 45 votes, which they can’t get. We are going nowhere; let’s meet when they want for the motion,” Kisila added.
Masinga Central MCA Joshua Mwonga echoed similar sentiments, stating that their commitment was to serve the people of Machakos and ensure public resources are well spent.
“We were elected to agitate for the electorate’s fundamental rights and ensure Machakos residents get the development projects they deserve. On the speaker’s impeachment, she is going nowhere,” Mwonga said.
Kyeleni MCA Grace Bahati emphasized that Kiusya’s impeachment was unjustified, particularly because she is the only female speaker in the country.
“She is the only female speaker in Kenya and is being targeted for doing her job. We will stand in solidarity with her,” Bahati stated.
The MCAs threatened to expose the motives behind the motion, asserting that they would not allow political games to interfere with service delivery. With a firm stance against the impeachment, they vowed to protect the speaker’s tenure and ensure that county resources are utilized for the benefit of residents.
