Renowned lawyer and political strategist Professor Makau Mutua has strongly denied claims that he held a secret meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The allegations, which circulated widely on social media on Friday, suggested that Mutua met with Gachagua at Sarvid Gardens in Kiambu, sparking political speculation.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page, Mutua dismissed the reports as false, emphasizing that he had never met Gachagua and had no plans to do so. He also refuted claims of meeting former Attorney General Githu Muigai at the restaurant.
“Just to set the record straight. I met neither Gachagua nor former AG Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens yesterday. I’ve never met Gachagua and have no such plans,” Mutua wrote.
He, however, confirmed that he was indeed at the establishment but only to catch up with his long-time friend, Senior Counsel Paul Muite, over Nyama Choma. Taking a jab at those spreading the false claims, Mutua added, “Too many idle people!”
Mutua has been a key figure in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political camp, having played a central role in Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. He traveled extensively with Raila, lobbying African heads of state to support the ODM leader’s candidacy. Mutua was also part of Raila’s inner circle during the 2022 presidential campaign and continues to serve as one of his advisors.
The alleged meeting, if true, would have been politically significant given Mutua’s strong criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration and his close ties to Raila. The clarification seeks to put an end to the speculation, though such claims often fuel intrigue in Kenya’s dynamic political landscape.
Meanwhile, Gachagua has intensified his political engagements at his Wamunyoro residence, reportedly seeking alliances with leaders such as Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, and PLP’s Martha Karua. As he builds momentum for the 2027 elections, speculation surrounding secret meetings and shifting alliances is likely to persist.
