Authorities in Kakamega County are investigating the tragic death of a 22-year-old man in what is suspected to be a case of suicide. The incident occurred in Soi village, Ikoli sub-location within Malava Constituency.
The deceased, identified as Evans Simeon, was found hanging from a rope in his room on Wednesday, in what has left residents of the quiet village in shock and mourning. The discovery was reported by family members, who immediately alerted local authorities.
According to the area assistant chief, Lawrence Kabula, preliminary investigations suggest that Evans may have taken his own life following a domestic disagreement with his mother. The dispute reportedly stemmed from the sale of sugarcane to a local milling factory. Evans is said to have been upset after his mother harvested and sold sugarcane without involving him in the decision or disclosing the proceeds from the transaction.
“This is a very unfortunate incident,” Kabula said. “We understand there was some disagreement over sugarcane money, but we are still conducting investigations to establish all the facts surrounding this tragedy.”
Residents described Evans as a quiet and reserved young man who rarely spoke about his problems. His sudden death has sparked conversations about mental health awareness and the importance of open communication within families.
Police have launched a formal probe into the incident and are interviewing family members and neighbors to piece together the events that led to the tragedy. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been moved to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Community leaders are urging families to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes and to provide emotional support to their loved ones. Mental health professionals in the region have also reiterated the need for increased awareness and access to counseling services, especially among the youth.
The incident has cast a somber mood over the village, with many expressing sorrow and concern over the rising number of suicide cases linked to domestic disagreements and financial disputes.
