Police in Uasin Gishu County have launched investigations after a man was discovered to have illegally established a police patrol base in Cherus Centre, Kesses Sub-County, without the authorization of the National Police Service (NPS).
The suspect, identified as Collins Leitich, alias Chepkulei, a resident of Asis Village in Ndugulu location, went to great lengths to make the unauthorized base appear legitimate. Reports indicate that he painted the structure in official police colors, creating the impression of an actual security post. The shocking discovery was made by local authorities, who quickly raised the alarm.
Officers from Kamuyu Police Post, under Kondoo Police Station, were notified and officially recorded the incident under OB04/08/03/2025. Leitich was subsequently arrested as investigations commenced to establish his motives behind the act.
Residents of Cherus Centre expressed disbelief upon learning that the patrol base was not an official initiative. Many had assumed it was a genuine effort to enhance security in the area.
“We were surprised to learn that the police patrol base was not official. Many of us thought it was a genuine initiative to improve security in the area,” remarked a resident.
Authorities are now working to determine Leitich’s intentions for setting up the base and whether he had any accomplices. The police have assured the public that appropriate legal action will be taken against the suspect as investigations continue.
Uasin Gishu County law enforcement officials have also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. They emphasized that only the National Police Service has the mandate to establish and operate police stations or patrol bases.
The incident has sparked concerns over security and the potential risks associated with unauthorized security operations. Police have reassured the public that they are handling the matter with urgency and will ensure that such occurrences are prevented in the future.
As the investigation unfolds, the authorities are keen to determine whether Leitich had been impersonating an officer and if any residents had unknowingly engaged with the illegal patrol base for security assistance.
