A shocking incident occurred outside the Supreme Court in Nairobi when a man set himself on fire in what appears to be a desperate act of protest or distress. The Judiciary confirmed the incident, stating that they are working closely with law enforcement to determine the circumstances that led to this extreme action and whether it is connected to a court case.
According to an official statement from the Judiciary, the incident took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. The man, whose identity has yet to be conclusively established, was walking along City Hall Way when he stopped outside the Supreme Court building. He was carrying a set of documents and a bottle containing a liquid believed to be petrol. He then placed the documents on the ground, poured the liquid over himself, and ignited the fire using a lighter.
Security officers stationed at the Supreme Court immediately responded to the incident. They rushed to put out the flames and managed to rescue the man, although he had already sustained significant burns.
The Judiciary’s spokesman, Paul Ndemo, provided further details, explaining that the Judiciary, in collaboration with the police and the Nairobi County Government, facilitated the man’s emergency response. An ambulance from the county government was dispatched to the scene, and the victim was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Authorities have collected the man’s burnt clothing and documents, which may provide insight into his motivations. Police are expected to question him once he recovers to establish the reasons behind his shocking act.
“The Judiciary is taking a keen interest in the matter, with a view to establishing if his drastic action could be linked to a court matter,” said Ndemo. He added that the Judiciary wishes the man a speedy recovery and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
This tragic event highlights the desperation some individuals may feel due to personal or legal struggles. It remains to be seen what prompted the man’s actions, but authorities are committed to uncovering the truth behind this distressing episode.
