People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has come out strongly in defense of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s legacy, urging Kenyans to recognize his vital role in the country’s fight for multiparty democracy.
Speaking amid growing criticism from some quarters that downplay Raila’s contributions to Kenya’s second liberation, Karua called for an honest reflection on the country’s political history. She noted that while political differences exist, they should not overshadow historical facts.
“Even though we differ politically, truth be said, Raila Odinga was an integral part of the second liberation alongside James Orengo and others,” said Karua, who was Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 Presidential Election.
Karua emphasized that the sacrifices made by Odinga during the country’s struggle for democratic space are well-documented. She recalled instances when Odinga, like many other reformists of the time, was arrested, detained, and even forced into exile due to his stance against the one-party rule.
“We cannot change history. He was detained, jailed, and like James Orengo, forced to flee Kenya for a while,” Karua stated.
Karua’s remarks come at a time when public discourse is increasingly polarized, with some younger voices questioning the impact of past leaders. In her view, such debates should be informed by facts and historical context.
The PLP leader also used the opportunity to advocate for constructive political engagement and collective responsibility in building the nation. “Any one of us has a role to make Kenya a better place for ourselves and generations to come. So let each do their bit,” she urged.
Karua stressed that democracy thrives on diversity of thought and healthy disagreements. She encouraged Kenyans to appreciate those who paved the way for the freedoms enjoyed today, even as they push for reforms and better governance.
Her comments are likely to resonate with those who hold the view that despite political rivalry, national heroes deserve due recognition for their efforts in shaping modern Kenya.
