Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is set for a grand homecoming in May, marking his return to Kenya and potentially launching his 2027 presidential bid. The event, being coordinated by his close allies, is expected to be one of the most significant political homecomings in recent history.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, a key figure in Matiang’i’s political camp, confirmed the preparations, stating that his supporters are eagerly awaiting his return. “Fred Matiang’i will soon be with us it’s only a matter of days. His many supporters across the country are excited and are planning a grand reception for him upon his return,” Onyonka said.
The homecoming event will feature a grand welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a procession through Nairobi’s Central Business District, and a major political rally. The spectacle is expected to mirror historic political homecomings, such as Kenneth Matiba’s return in the early 1990s.
Matiang’i’s return signals the beginning of an intensive grassroots engagement tour across the country, laying the groundwork for his presidential campaign. A national coordinating committee has been formed to oversee logistics, while regional caucuses in cities like Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Mombasa, and Wajir are actively mobilizing support.
The former CS is seen as a formidable contender in the 2027 race, likely to challenge President William Ruto. His entry into the contest could also impact the aspirations of former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has been rumored to be considering a bid. Matiang’i’s allies are currently in discussions to determine the best political vehicle for his campaign, with the former ruling Jubilee Party among those offering him a ticket.
Additionally, parties from Kisii and Nyamira counties have formed the Taifa Alliance to consolidate support for his candidacy.
“At the moment, we are building momentum through consultations to identify a political vehicle for his bid. Several parties have already expressed interest in supporting him,” said former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara.
With momentum building and political strategizing in full swing, Matiang’i’s return is poised to shake up the 2027 presidential race, making him a key player in the country’s political landscape.
