The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has strongly dismissed a letter circulating on social media claiming that its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, has been fired. The organization labeled the document as fake and urged the public to disregard the misinformation.
In an official statement to newsrooms, MCSK National Chairman Ephantus Kamau stated that the letter did not originate from any legitimate authority within the organization. He emphasized that the alleged author of the letter is merely a member of the society with no legal authority or capacity to effect such decisions.
“Please disregard this misinformation,” Kamau said. “The interim board is excited and fully committed to serving the entire membership of MCSK.”
Kamau clarified that the individual behind the false communication is currently facing legal proceedings for contempt of court orders and is under restraining orders. Furthermore, their tenure as a member of the board is set to lapse on February 16, 2025.
The fake letter, which has been widely shared on social media, claimed that Mutua’s employment as CEO had been terminated effective April 3, 2025. It also falsely asserted that Mutua was no longer authorized to transact any business on behalf of MCSK and warned third parties against engaging with him.
MCSK reiterated that Mutua remains the legitimate CEO and continues to execute his duties as mandated. The organization promised to keep its members and the public informed of any official developments.
As a Collective Management Organization (CMO), MCSK represents the rights of authors, composers, arrangers, and publishers of musical works. Its core function is to collect and distribute royalties from public performances and broadcasts of its members’ work, ensuring fair compensation for music creators.
With a diverse membership that includes both local and international stakeholders, MCSK continues to play a crucial role in advocating for the rights of artists and ensuring proper management of music copyrights in Kenya. The organization remains steadfast in supporting its members and maintaining transparency amid attempts to mislead the public.
