Migori County police have arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of stabbing his cousin to death following a heated argument. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in the Nyatike sub-county, leaving residents in shock.
According to Area Assistant Chief William Jabed, the suspect, identified as Fred Ngere, and his 21-year-old cousin, Charles Otieno, were involved in a dispute that quickly escalated. Witnesses reported that Ngere left the scene after the quarrel, only to return armed with a kitchen knife. He allegedly stabbed Otieno in the chest before fleeing.
Bystanders rushed Otieno to a nearby health facility, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Law enforcement officers later tracked down and arrested the suspect, who is currently in police custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
Otieno’s body has been transferred to Migori Level Four Hospital, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The incident has sparked concerns among local leaders and residents over rising cases of violence among young people in the area. Assistant Chief Jabed urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution methods to prevent similar tragedies.
“This is a very unfortunate incident that could have been avoided. We encourage young people to seek dialogue and mediation rather than resorting to violence,” Jabed stated.
Community members expressed their grief and called for justice for the slain young man. Many also emphasized the need for intervention programs to curb violent behavior among the youth.
Police have assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted to ensure justice prevails. Meanwhile, the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court soon to face murder charges.
Authorities have also encouraged residents to report any escalating conflicts to local administrators or law enforcement to prevent such incidents in the future.
