A woman in Migori County has been arrested for allegedly attacking her husband with a machete before setting him on fire after learning about his plans to marry a second wife.
According to local authorities, the shocking incident took place in Suna West Sub-County. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, reportedly confronted her husband upon hearing rumors that he was planning to take another wife.
Eyewitnesses and neighbors stated that an argument ensued between the couple before the woman attacked her husband with a machete, leaving him with severe injuries. Not stopping there, she allegedly proceeded to douse him with a flammable substance and set him on fire.
“We are yet to establish the full motives behind the attack, but preliminary investigations indicate that the woman reacted after learning that her husband intended to marry a second wife,” a local chief said.
Neighbors, who were alerted by the victim’s cries for help, rushed to the scene and managed to rescue him. He was immediately taken to Migori Level Four Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for burns and machete wounds. His condition remains critical but stable, according to medical personnel.
The suspect was arrested and is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue. Law enforcement officials have urged residents to seek peaceful means of resolving domestic disputes instead of resorting to violence.
Cases of domestic violence have been on the rise in Kenya, with authorities emphasizing the need for mediation and legal interventions in family conflicts. Experts have warned that extreme reactions to marital disagreements can have devastating consequences, not only for the individuals involved but also for their families and communities.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. Meanwhile, local leaders have called for enhanced community awareness on conflict resolution and the legal rights of spouses in polygamous marriages.
