Muthwani Ward MCA Dominic Maitha, who was reported missing for close to 24 hours, has resurfaced, confirming that he is safe and sound. Maitha denied claims that he had been abducted, instead revealing that he had gone into hiding after being trailed by unidentified individuals on motorbikes.
Speaking to The Star on Thursday, Maitha stated that he turned his phone to flight mode and sought refuge at various locations after noticing he was being followed by three hooded men on two motorbikes in Machakos town.
“I wasn’t abducted but chased by people on motorbikes,” Maitha clarified. “I was leaving a hotel in Machakos town when I saw a man standing near a wall, wearing a black hood. My car’s headlights lit up where he was, and I saw him whistle before saying, ‘he is here.’”
Sensing danger, Maitha quickly switched his headlights to full beam and noticed two motorbikes positioned strategically near the hotel exit, with riders seemingly waiting for him. Acting on instinct, he put his phone on flight mode and immediately drove away, fearing for his safety.
“I wasn’t sure whether they were police officers or hired goons. I drove towards the Golf Club, made a U-turn at Kobil petrol station, and headed towards Nairobi,” he recounted.
The MCA said the motorbikes pursued him, prompting him to seek refuge at a nearby hotel to assess the situation. Later, he drove to a hotel in Athi River, checking in at around 1:00 am on Monday. For nearly two days, he kept his phone off and avoided contact with his family, prioritizing his security.
“I parked my car at the far end, booked a room, and stayed there until Wednesday. I was only woken up by hotel attendants at around 11:00 am,” Maitha said.
His disappearance had caused alarm among family and colleagues, who had reported him missing at the Machakos police station. His sudden reappearance has raised questions about the individuals who allegedly trailed him and their possible intentions. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities seek to establish the identities of those involved.
