Kathiani Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Mbui has dismissed the recent pact between President William Ruto and ODM party leader Raila Odinga, arguing that it will not secure Ruto a second term in office.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show, Mbui suggested that the agreement is a calculated move by the president to neutralize the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election. He expressed skepticism about the legitimacy of the 10-point agenda signed by the two leaders, stating that it is nothing more than a repackaging of the Constitution.
“Whatever is happening right now is not going to add any value to him. If you look at the 10-point agenda that was raised, you just need to read the Constitution,” Mbui remarked. “I suspect this is a scheme by Ruto to prepare himself for 2027. He wanted to silence the opposition.”
Last week, President Ruto and Raila Odinga signed a political pact centered on national unity and governance reforms. However, Mbui dismissed the agreement as a hurriedly crafted document meant to create the illusion of political progress.
“They just did a summary of the Constitution, picked some things to make it look and sound very nice and then tell Kenyans things are happening,” he added.
The MP also questioned Ruto’s commitment to treating Odinga with respect, arguing that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the ruling party, has long been responsible for political attacks against the former Prime Minister.
“Who has been mistreating Raila? It is UDA. So now suddenly he says that now ‘you will be treated well’, by who?” Mbui posed.
The agreement has been met with criticism from various political figures, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, who termed it a betrayal. They argued that Raila’s move disregarded the sacrifices made by Kenyans who protested against the high cost of living, punitive taxes, and governance failures in 2023 and 2024.
“If there is no formula at KICC today showing how Kenyans are going to compensate their families and the loss of lives because of police brutality, then nothing will come out of KICC other than betrayal of the Kenyan people,” Kalonzo asserted.
Despite the backlash, Ruto has maintained that his decision is driven by a desire to honor Odinga’s contributions to the country’s political landscape.
