Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has strongly condemned the attack on Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, which took place on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium, just before the Harambee Stars’ match against Gabon. Mudavadi emphasized the importance of political tolerance, warning that such incidents undermine Kenya’s democratic foundation.
“What happened to Peter Salasya at Nyayo Stadium today is unfortunate. We won’t always agree, and that’s okay. But respect, dialogue, and unity must remain non-negotiable,” Mudavadi said. He stressed that respect is both a right and a responsibility, urging leaders and citizens alike to uphold civility in political discourse.
The attack on Salasya, as captured in viral videos, involved a group of rowdy youths physically confronting the legislator. Some were seen pushing him towards the stadium exit, while others hurled objects at him. Police intervened swiftly to escort him to safety amid chants demanding that he respect opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Despite the aggression, Salasya responded with composure, later posting a single-word tweet, “Noted,” on X (formerly Twitter). His restrained reaction has drawn widespread support, with many urging for justice and respect for political diversity.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also condemned the incident, terming it unacceptable and calling for accountability. “This is uncouth, uncalled for, and lugubrious. Whoever planned this against Salasya must be brought to book. It must stop,” Amisi said. He reminded Kenyans that freedom of speech and expression is enshrined in the constitution, asserting that while people may not agree with Salasya’s approach, he should not be subjected to violence.
Mudavadi echoed these sentiments, warning against political divisions that could derail the country’s progress. “A house divided cannot stand. Let’s choose reason over chaos and maturity over noise. Kenya’s future depends on it,” he urged.
The incident has reignited concerns about political intolerance in Kenya, with leaders calling for restraint and mutual respect among citizens. As investigations continue, Kenyans will be watching clos
