A murder suspect attempting to evade arrest in Nandi County on Monday night tragically lost his life after jumping from the rooftop of his parent’s home. The incident, which occurred in Sangalo village, sparked protests among residents, with some alleging that the suspect may have been shot by police.
Tensions ran high in the area following the suspect’s death, prompting the deployment of anti-riot police to quell the unrest. According to Kabiyet OCPD Simon Muli, the suspect had resisted arrest and locked himself inside the house when officers arrived at the scene.
Efforts to convince him to surrender were futile as he allegedly threatened the officers. In an attempt to force compliance, the police fired bullets into the air, but the suspect remained defiant. He then made a desperate move to escape by climbing to the rooftop, intending to flee. However, in his attempt to jump, he landed on a cut tree, suffering severe injuries that ultimately led to his death.
“He jumped from the rooftop and fell on a tree that had been cut, which ripped his stomach open,” OCPD Muli confirmed. The injured suspect was rushed to a hospital in Kapsabet town, where he succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.
Authorities had been pursuing the suspect in connection with the murder of his stepbrother in December last year in Chesumei area. Investigations revealed that the stepbrother had also been a suspect in the death of their father, with land disputes believed to be at the center of the tragic family conflicts.
The officers conducting the operation were from Chesumei and had been assigned to arrest the suspect so he could face legal action for his alleged crimes.
Despite allegations from some residents that the suspect was shot, OCPD Muli dismissed these claims, maintaining that police had nothing to hide. “The deceased was not shot, and the facts are as clear as what I have explained. An official report on the matter will be released,” he stated.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding land disputes and family conflicts in the region. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue. Meanwhile, security has been heightened in the area to prevent further unrest.
