Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) to stay away from politics and focus on delivering their mandates to the people. Speaking during the Jukwaa La Usalama forum held at Makueni Boys High School in Makueni County, Murkomen emphasized the need for administrative officers to serve with integrity, impartiality, and a firm commitment to the Constitution.
“Chiefs, do your jobs, leave the politics to MCAs and other people because you are not looking for votes,” Murkomen said. He noted that some of the world’s most successful countries have managed to achieve prosperity by ensuring that public service and politics operate independently.
Murkomen stressed the importance of impartiality, urging officers not to discriminate against any region based on how its residents voted in the last general elections. He reminded administrators that President William Ruto had issued clear instructions to ensure equal service delivery across all regions of the country.
“The Constitution is clear every Kenyan has a right to government services. When you say Governor Mutula Kilonzo was elected on a certain party ticket and the President on a rival outfit, what about tomorrow? The political landscape keeps changing,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary also acknowledged the professionalism of administrators who stood by the truth even when political tensions were high. He stated that he holds in high regard those officials who remained steadfast in their duties despite political pressures.
Murkomen’s message comes as a reminder of the critical role NGAOs play in governance. These officers—ranging from Chiefs to County Commissioners are mandated to implement national government policies and programs, coordinate service delivery, promote nationhood, and uphold national security.
By urging them to remain politically neutral, Murkomen seeks to reinforce public trust in Kenya’s administrative framework and promote fair and effective governance across the country.
His remarks are particularly timely as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen the public service and ensure that all Kenyans receive equitable and quality services, regardless of political affiliations.
