Nairobi Water Company has issued a stern warning to residents using illegal water connections, urging them to regularize their water supply by visiting the regional offices before April 30, 2025, to avoid facing penalties and legal action.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited reminded customers that unauthorized water connections are against the law and compromise the city’s efforts to provide equitable and safe water access. The company emphasized that customers who voluntarily choose to regularize their water connections by the given deadline will have any applicable penalties waived.
However, those who fail to comply after the deadline will face prosecution and will be required to pay fines, in addition to any other penalties associated with illegal connections. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing mission to combat the widespread issue of illegal water connections, which not only result in unbilled consumption but also pose risks to the quality of water and public health.
The company also reiterated the importance of settling outstanding water bills to avoid service interruptions. Customers can pay their bills through various channels, including mobile services like M-Pesa Paybill 444400, bank options such as NCBA, ABSA, Equity, Cooperative, Sidian, and Diamond Trust, and the M-Pesa *260# shortcode.
Nairobi Water Company’s efforts to tackle illegal water connections are geared towards improving service delivery and ensuring a sustainable, safe water supply to all city residents. These efforts also support the company’s broader goal of maintaining financial sustainability while adhering to government regulations.
To further its objectives, Nairobi Water collaborates with several stakeholders, including Nairobi County and the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), to enhance service provision and promote responsible water usage. The company’s efforts also extend to public education on the importance of water conservation.
With these actions, Nairobi Water hopes to ensure that all residents have access to clean, safe, and reliable water while curbing illegal practices that undermine these essential services.
