Narok County has intensified its efforts to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by officially adopting the Anti-FGM Policy Implementation Matrix. This move marks a significant milestone in reinforcing the county’s commitment to eradicating the harmful practice.
The implementation matrix follows the launch of Narok’s Anti-FGM and Gender Policies in 2022, providing structured guidelines to ensure effective policy enforcement. The County Department of Gender, in partnership with the County Gender Technical Working Group, spearheaded the development of this framework to enhance accountability and coordination in anti-FGM efforts.
During the official adoption forum, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) received a comprehensive briefing on the policy framework and its strategic objectives. Robert Simotwo, the County Executive Committee Member for Gender, lauded the MCAs for their instrumental role in advocating for gender-related policies and their unwavering support in the fight against FGM.
“Your leadership in advocacy is crucial in eliminating FGM within our communities,” Simotwo stated, underscoring the importance of legislative backing in eradicating the practice.
Jefferson Langat, Chair of the County Gender Committee, reaffirmed his commitment to the Anti-FGM Policy Matrix, commending stakeholders for their relentless efforts in protecting girls and women from FGM. Similarly, Ipato Surum, Chairperson of the Anti-FGM Committee, condemned FGM as an outdated and illegal practice, warning against its medicalization, which could make it more secretive and dangerous.
Statistics show a remarkable decline in FGM prevalence in Narok County, dropping from 78 per cent in 2014 to 51 per cent in 2022. Currently, the rate stands at 22 per cent in remote areas. While these numbers reflect progress, authorities stress the need for sustained efforts as FGM remains a driver of early marriages and other harmful social norms.
The adoption forum received support from various organizations, including We-World, the Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC), Kakenya’s Dream, and Amref Health Africa. These organizations continue to play a pivotal role in funding and implementing grassroots initiatives to combat FGM.
With the new implementation matrix in place, Narok County is poised to enhance enforcement mechanisms, strengthen community engagement, and work towards the complete eradication of FGM.
