As the 2027 general elections draw closer, political leaders are already aligning their forces and strategising for what promises to be a highly competitive race. Among the key players positioning themselves for the presidency is Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who has long expressed his intentions to challenge President William Ruto in the upcoming polls.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, a prominent Kamba leader, has made a powerful call to unite the Kamba community behind Kalonzo. Speaking during a burial ceremony in Mitaboni Ward, Ndeti emphasized the importance of collective support for Kalonzo’s bid, stressing that the success of the Kamba nation in the 2027 race will depend on backing a single candidate.
Ndeti urged the people to not only support Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions but also ensure the election of leaders from his party at all levels, from MCAs to governors, to create a solid and dependable political base. “Let us walk this journey together by fully supporting his bid,” Ndeti said. She also reminded the gathering of the crucial role the Kamba community plays in the nation’s political landscape and the necessity for a united front to ensure victory.
While Kalonzo’s presidential bid is gaining traction, the 2027 presidential race remains uncertain with other heavyweights positioning themselves for a shot at the top seat. Among these is veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, who has yet to declare his candidacy but has made it clear that his ODM party will field a candidate. Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is also expected to join the race, with his Gusii community already rallying behind him.
In addition to her political support for Kalonzo, Governor Ndeti highlighted several key development projects her administration has initiated in Machakos County, including improvements to healthcare, education, and youth empowerment. She also addressed criticism of her Machakos Youth Empowerment Programme, which trains and equips local youth with skills for the job market, calling it a crucial initiative for the county’s future.
With such a high-stakes race ahead, Ndeti’s rallying cry for unity could be a decisive factor in Kalonzo’s push for the presidency.
