The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has strongly condemned the assault of a woman in Nyabisimba, Nyamira County, during her ex-husband’s burial, calling it a blatant violation of human rights and gender equality. The incident, which was captured in viral footage, has sparked outrage, shedding light on the deep-rooted gender-based violence disguised as cultural tradition.
In a statement, NGEC Chairperson Rehema Jaldesa decried the attack, stating that it not only violates the woman’s fundamental rights and dignity but also exposes the persistence of harmful cultural practices that subject women to violence and discrimination.
“This vile act, captured in viral footage, exposes the deep-rooted gender-based violence disguised as culture, violating women’s fundamental rights and dignity,” Jaldesa said.
The woman was reportedly assaulted by in-laws attempting to coerce her into participating in cultural burial rites against her will. NGEC emphasized that such acts amount to gender-based violence, assault, and coercion—criminal offenses punishable under Kenyan law. The Commission called on the National Police Service (NPS) to conduct swift investigations and ensure that justice is served.
Jaldesa further highlighted that harmful cultural traditions should never override an individual’s dignity, autonomy, and human rights. She reiterated that Article 27 of the Constitution guarantees equality and freedom from discrimination, stressing that women should not be forced to adhere to outdated, oppressive customs.
Following the public outcry, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of three suspects linked to the crime. The suspects, identified as Robert Pokea Sarudi, 43, Bismark Ondiek Sarudi, 40, and Lameck Ogindo Osoro, 27, allegedly forced the woman to participate in traditional rituals against her will and physically assaulted her, inflicting injuries on her body.
The NGEC has urged authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for gender equality and women’s rights. The Commission also called for increased awareness campaigns to educate communities on the dangers of harmful cultural practices and the importance of respecting human rights.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women from gender-based violence and cultural oppression.
