Former East African Court of Justice (EACJ) judge Charles Nyachae has expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) if given the opportunity. Speaking during his vetting before the IEBC Selection Panel, Nyachae acknowledged the challenges and pressures that come with the role but affirmed that he possesses the necessary skills and experience to navigate them effectively.
Nyachae emphasized that his tenure as the chairperson of the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) provided him with valuable experience in handling diverse personalities and managing complex tasks. He cited his ability to listen as one of his strongest leadership traits, which he believes is crucial for managing the commission’s affairs.
“If you ask me about my personality, people have told me, and I believe it is true, that one of the gifts that God gave me is to listen. This is very important when you are in such an environment,” Nyachae said. “That way, you can be able to manage people a little bit better.”
Despite recognizing the risks associated with the role, Nyachae asserted that he would neither compromise his integrity nor put his life on the line. He revealed that he had been warned against applying for the position, with some advising that taking up the role could mean facing serious threats.
Nevertheless, Nyachae reiterated his determination, stating, “Despite all the challenges, I have the courage and determination to take on the job.”
Nyachae is among 11 candidates shortlisted for the position of IEBC chairperson. Other candidates interviewed on the same day included Naivasha Law Courts Chief Magistrate Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadan and former Judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi. Edward Katama Ngeywa was also scheduled for an afternoon interview.
The selection process, which began on Monday, will conclude on Wednesday. This will pave the way for interviews of 105 candidates shortlisted for the commissioner positions. Interviews for the commissioner roles are set to take place from Thursday, March 27, to April 24, at the College of Insurance, South C, Nairobi.
The new leadership at IEBC is expected to play a crucial role in overseeing electoral processes and upholding democratic principles in Kenya.
