Nyamira County Governor is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of misusing public funds, with the Senate County Public Accounts Committee raising concerns about the county’s financial management. Appearing before the committee on Wednesday, the governor attributed the stalled accountability measures to a divided County Assembly, claiming that internal conflicts had hampered proper governance.
However, senators dismissed the explanation, accusing the governor of deliberately evading accountability. They warned that the county is on the brink of a financial crisis, citing concerns over unaccounted funds. The committee emphasized that while the County Executive is swift in presenting budget proposals, it remains hesitant to provide clear records on expenditure, raising suspicions of financial mismanagement.
The situation has been further complicated by allegations from Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), who claim that an illegal supplementary budget was passed outside the Assembly’s official structure. According to the MCAs, key county operations are currently being managed by an impeached speaker, raising governance and legality concerns. The move has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers who question the legitimacy of financial decisions made under such circumstances.
With the statutory audit deadline just three days away, senators are now calling for a thorough investigation into the county’s expenditure. The Auditor General’s report has already revealed massive misuse of funds, intensifying demands for immediate corrective action. Senate County Public Accounts Committee chair Moses Kajwang noted that tougher measures are under consideration, including a deeper probe into Nyamira’s financial dealings.
Kajwang emphasized that the Senate will not allow counties to misappropriate funds meant for development and essential services. He further warned that governors must be held accountable for financial decisions made under their watch.
As the calls for investigations grow louder, Nyamira County residents remain concerned about the impact of financial mismanagement on service delivery. The governor now faces mounting pressure to provide satisfactory answers and ensure transparency in county operations. With the audit deadline fast approaching, the fate of Nyamira’s financial future remains uncertain, as the Senate prepares to take decisive action.
