The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has announced the suspension of its grassroots elections in certain regions, following a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. The suspension affects key areas such as East Kamagak Ward in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County, and Embakasi East Constituency in Nairobi. These elections, which were originally set to take place next week, have been put on hold due to concerns raised by party members and stakeholders.
The National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) issued a statement on Friday, April 4, confirming that the elections in these areas would not proceed as scheduled. The elections for the Kasipul Branch, set for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, have also been suspended. In its announcement, the NECC assured members that new election dates would be announced in the near future, and emphasized that other areas not affected by the suspension would continue with their elections as planned.
The decision to halt the elections in Embakasi East Constituency comes after a series of complaints and concerns regarding the election process. The NECC has stated that it will address these complaints thoroughly before setting a new date for the elections in this constituency.
ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has called for calm and urged party members to approach the elections with unity and peace. Speaking in Mombasa, Raila emphasized that the grassroots elections are crucial for the party’s future but are not “do-or-die” events. He stressed that ODM needs the support of all its members, both aspirants and voters, and that the elections should not be a source of division within the party.
Raila’s remarks come at a time when internal disagreements and disputes have emerged within various ODM branches. His call for peaceful and orderly elections reflects his commitment to ensuring the party remains united as it moves forward towards the general elections. As the situation develops, ODM members are expected to stay engaged and participate in the party’s activities while maintaining harmony.
