Police officers in Wajir have arrested two suspects involved in a late-night robbery at a petrol station along Mandera Road, while three others remain at large. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrests in a statement, revealing that the suspects, aged 28 and 49, were apprehended after officers responded to a distress call from the station.
According to the DCI, five robbers disguised in jungle uniforms and impersonating police officers stormed the petrol station, overpowering the watchman and pump attendant. The gang tied up the employees before stealing Ksh30,000 in cash. A police response team quickly mobilized to the scene, leading to the arrest of two suspects, while the other three managed to escape.
Authorities recovered several incriminating items from the arrested suspects, including a mallet, police and military clothing, and other evidence linking them to the crime. The two suspects are currently in custody and are set to face court proceedings. Police are intensifying their search for the remaining three suspects.
The incident highlights a worrying trend of increased robbery cases across Kenya. Earlier this year, similar arrests were made in Kisii and Gem, Yala, following a series of violent robberies. On January 3, 2025, police launched a manhunt for suspects involved in a robbery at a timber yard and hardware store near Ulumbi Junction along the Kisumu-Busia highway. The suspects were eventually apprehended after an extensive operation.
Additionally, in March, DCI detectives arrested two individuals in the Daraja Mbili estate in Kisii town. The suspects were found in possession of a pistol, further raising concerns about rising armed robberies in various parts of the country.
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Authorities have also reassured citizens that efforts are being intensified to curb crime and bring perpetrators to justice. As investigations continue, security agencies are calling for cooperation from the public to help track down the remaining suspects involved in the Wajir robbery.
