Tension remains high in Loruk, Baringo County, following a bandit raid in Akorean village, Sibilo, Saimo Soi, where 40 goats were stolen on Tuesday evening. Police officers managed to recover 38 of the stolen animals after an intense operation.
This incident follows the tragic killing of Loruk Chief Victor Sebei, who was shot dead three days earlier in what police described as a crossfire between security officers and bandits. The attack has heightened fears among local residents, who continue to suffer from persistent insecurity in the region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the situation on Friday during a visit by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei. Murkomen attributed the surge in banditry across Baringo and Samburu counties to long-standing disputes over administrative boundaries affecting Baringo North, Baringo South, Samburu, Laikipia, Isiolo, and Turkana counties.
The CS condemned politicians who publicly advocate for peace during the day but allegedly incite violence in secret night meetings. He urged leaders to promote unity and work with security agencies to restore order in the affected areas.
Despite the ongoing security challenges, Murkomen commended the police for their swift efforts in recovering stolen livestock and working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents. He emphasized the government’s commitment to curbing the rising insecurity in the region.
To bolster security efforts, the Ministry of Internal Security, in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will expand Operation Maliza Uhalifu to Laikipia, Samburu, Meru, and Isiolo counties. This operation aims to eliminate criminal threats in East Suguta Valley, an area notorious for banditry attacks. A new security base will also be established in Kirimon, Laikipia North, near Mugogodo North Sub-County, to enhance rapid response capabilities.
CS Murkomen met with top security officials, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy IG Gilbert Masengeli, and Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan, to assess the situation and develop further strategic interventions.
Residents remain hopeful that the government’s renewed security efforts will restore peace and stability in Baringo and its neighboring counties.
