Githunguri Member of Parliament, Gathoni Wamuchomba, has been summoned to Kiambu Police Station over allegations of incitement following an incident during President William Ruto’s recent tour of the Mt Kenya region. The MP, a vocal ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, is accused of stirring unrest that led to anti-Ruto chants during the President’s visit to Kiambu on Friday.
Wamuchomba, known for her outspoken criticism of the current government, is believed to have organized a parallel gathering on the same day as Ruto’s tour. Authorities claim that her meeting fueled demonstrations, culminating in crowds chanting “Ruto must go” in protest of the President’s leadership. The incident is seen as part of a larger wave of political tension in the Mt Kenya region, where Ruto’s reception has been increasingly hostile.
In a post shared on her social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), Wamuchomba confirmed the summons, stating that she was called by the Kiambu County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO). The MP remained defiant, arguing that the people of Githunguri were rejecting the government’s unfulfilled promises. She also emphasized that arrests would not change the realities on the ground, particularly in relation to unimplemented projects that the government had pledged to the region.
“The great people of Githunguri refused to be lured by fake promises and projects that never materialized. Arrests you can do, but that will not change the facts! No more lies! You promised, deliver!” Wamuchomba wrote, signaling her continued opposition to Ruto’s leadership.
The situation has further escalated political tensions in a region that was once seen as a stronghold of President Ruto’s support base. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these developments, especially as the nation’s political landscape becomes more polarized.
This incident also underscores the growing divisions within the ruling party and the challenges faced by President Ruto in maintaining unity in his own backyard.
