Isaac Mutuma has officially taken office as the new Governor of Meru County following the impeachment of his predecessor, Kawira Mwangaza. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday at Mwendatu Grounds in Meru, marking a significant political transition for the county.
The event was attended by several leaders, including Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Muga, Cooperatives Principal Secretary Patrick Kiburi, and Deputy Laikipia Governor Reuben Kamuri, among others. Their presence underscored the importance of the occasion and the county’s new leadership direction.
Mutuma’s ascension to the governorship follows a legal and political battle that saw Mwangaza’s impeachment upheld by the Senate. Although the ruling was briefly suspended, the High Court later confirmed her removal. On March 14, Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the petition challenging her impeachment failed to meet the legal threshold to overturn the Senate’s decision. The court affirmed that Mwangaza had been granted a fair hearing and dismissed her plea to nullify the gazette notice confirming her removal.
Mutuma was elected as Meru Deputy Governor in the 2022 general elections, running alongside Mwangaza as independent candidates. Their victory was historic, as they overcame political heavyweights such as former Governor Kiraitu Murungi and his predecessor Peter Munya. Their triumph signaled a shift in Meru’s political landscape, demonstrating the electorate’s willingness to embrace new leadership.
Before venturing into politics, Mutuma had a distinguished career in public service. He served as a senior officer in the Kenya Prisons Service and later as a Reverend in the Methodist Churches of Kenya. His diverse background in security, justice, and religious leadership brings a unique perspective to his new role.
Mutuma holds a Higher Diploma in Forensic Psychology and Criminology from the Kenya Institute of Studies in Criminal Justice, alongside a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Kenya Methodist University. His academic and professional credentials suggest a leader equipped with both administrative and ethical insights.
As he assumes office, Meru residents will be keenly watching how he navigates the county’s challenges and delivers on the promises of governance and development.
