As the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson elections draw closer, Kenyans have shown an outpouring of support for Raila Odinga’s bid, with vibrant celebrations outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi. On Saturday, supporters danced, performed acrobatic stunts, and waved the Kenyan flag in a display of patriotism and anticipation ahead of the decisive vote in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Chanting victory songs and rallying cries of “Eeeh, aah!” the enthusiastic crowd mirrored the national mood one of both optimism and nervous tension. The former Prime Minister’s campaign for the continental leadership role has captivated the country, given the potential political ramifications for Kenya’s 2027 general elections.
Raila Odinga is in the final stages of a grueling continental campaign, vying for the AUC chairmanship against Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. With the election set to be decided by 55 AU member states, Raila requires a two-thirds majority 33 votes to secure the seat.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that many Kenyans had traveled to Addis Ababa at their own expense to witness and support Raila’s candidacy. “I want to say the level of anxiety is very high. There are so many Kenyans who, out of their own pocket and their own commitment, have come to Addis Ababa,” Mudavadi told journalists in Ethiopia.
Additionally, a delegation of approximately 100 MPs has traveled to Ethiopia to witness the historic occasion. This highlights the significance of Raila’s bid, not only for his political future but also for Kenya’s strategic positioning on the continental stage.
The AUC chairperson, elected for a four-year renewable term, plays a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s policy direction. This position rotates among the continent’s five regions, and this election cycle gives the Eastern bloc, which includes Kenya, the opportunity to present a candidate. The Northern region is designated to produce a deputy chairperson.
A staunch advocate for Pan-Africanism, Raila Odinga has promised to accelerate Africa’s development, enhance self-reliance, and foster unity. His vision seeks to uplift the continent by addressing historical challenges and unlocking Africa’s full potential through progressive leadership.
