The Jubilee Party has officially endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. The decision follows Matiang’i’s direct expression of interest in vying for the presidency, prompting the party leadership to begin preparations for a national campaign on his behalf.
Speaking during a recent interview, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni explained that the move was driven by Matiang’i’s own initiative, stating that he personally reached out to the party to declare his ambition for the top seat. Kioni emphasized that it is the duty of a political party to market its candidate and create the necessary structures for a competitive presidential bid.
Matiang’i’s selection, according to Kioni, is a significant step for Jubilee, given that a party of its stature should always have a clear presidential candidate. He stressed the importance of maintaining leadership presence in national politics, adding that when capable individuals step forward to offer leadership, they deserve a fair opportunity to be considered.
Kioni also disclosed that Matiang’i would soon make a public statement regarding his political future and outline his vision for the country. He reassured party members and the public that they would not have to wait long for Matiang’i to address the matter, as he intends to clarify his position when the timing is right.
Despite the endorsement, Kioni was quick to point out that Matiang’i’s candidacy is not an automatic ticket to becoming the preferred opposition flagbearer. Instead, he underscored the need for a broader coalition to mount a formidable challenge against the current administration. He reiterated that Jubilee’s decision to field Matiang’i does not necessarily mean he will be the only opposition candidate, as alliances and coalitions will play a crucial role in determining the final lineup.
According to Kioni, the opposition needs a strong and united front to counter what he described as the challenges posed by the Kenya Kwanza-led government. He indicated that discussions with other opposition leaders were ongoing, with the aim of rallying behind a candidate who has the best chance of securing victory in the presidential election.
Kioni further defended Jubilee’s endorsement of Matiang’i by highlighting his proven track record in government. He pointed to Matiang’i’s past success in implementing reforms, particularly in the education sector, where he played a key role in streamlining policies and addressing systemic issues. The Secretary General noted that the country’s education sector is currently facing numerous challenges, including concerns over university funding, and asserted that Matiang’i possesses the expertise to introduce effective solutions.
Beyond education, Kioni stated that Matiang’i has the capacity to restore and improve essential national programs. He cited the now-defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) as an example of an initiative that could be revitalized under Matiang’i’s leadership, with a focus on enhancing efficiency and accessibility for all citizens.
Kioni also mentioned Matiang’i’s previous involvement in the implementation of the Huduma Namba program, an initiative aimed at streamlining government services and citizen identification. He expressed confidence that Matiang’i’s leadership would ensure the return of such programs in a more effective and impactful manner.
The announcement of Matiang’i’s candidacy marks a strategic move by Jubilee as it seeks to reestablish itself as a dominant political force. While the party acknowledges that forming alliances will be crucial in the upcoming elections, its leadership believes that Matiang’i’s governance experience, policy expertise, and ability to drive reforms make him a strong contender for the presidency.
As discussions among opposition leaders continue, the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections is expected to evolve. With Jubilee throwing its weight behind Matiang’i, attention now turns to how other parties within the opposition will respond and whether they will rally behind a single candidate or field multiple contenders against the ruling coalition.
For now, the focus remains on Matiang’i’s next move and his anticipated public address, where he is expected to outline his political agenda and provide more clarity on his vision for the country. Jubilee, on its part, has affirmed its commitment to supporting its candidate while remaining open to coalition-building efforts aimed at securing a strong and united opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.
