The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has launched a state-of-the-art Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) complex at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) in Kahawa Garrison, Nairobi. The facility, funded by the German government, is expected to enhance Kenya’s defence capabilities and strengthen peace-building efforts in the region.
The facility comprises modern infrastructure, including lecture halls, a 200-seat auditorium, a library, an in-patient health centre, and an IED museum occupying 12 blocks. The centre aims to provide specialized training on countering IED threats, a growing concern in global security.
Speaking at the inauguration, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya expressed gratitude to the German government for its support. She emphasized that the facility would play a crucial role in addressing the increasing use of IEDs by terrorist groups, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to regional and global peace.
“By supporting the construction of this complex, Germany has demonstrated its commitment to supporting Kenya’s determined pursuit of regional and global peace and stability. This support strengthens the deep bilateral ties between our two countries,” Tuya stated.
The CS highlighted that IEDs had become a preferred weapon for terror groups, making it imperative for Kenya to enhance its counter-IED capabilities. She affirmed that the facility would cement the International Peace Support Training Centre’s (IPSTC) status as a United Nations Centre of Excellence for peacekeeping training.
Kenya has been at the forefront of peacekeeping and conflict resolution in the Horn of Africa. The country’s geopolitical position presents both opportunities and challenges, necessitating continuous investment in security infrastructure.
Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary for Defence, Thomas Hitschler, reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s peace-building efforts. He acknowledged Kenya’s role as a regional anchor state and praised its dedication to global stability.
The event was attended by senior KDF officials, including General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Major General Luka Kutto, IPSTC Director Brigadier Joyce Sitienei, and German Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth.
With this new facility, Kenya reaffirms its commitment to counter-terrorism and regional peace efforts, ensuring a more secure future for the country and the region.
