Meru politician Michael Makarina has strongly criticized Tigania East Member of Parliament Mpuru Aburi, accusing him of interfering in the leadership of newly installed Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia. He asserted that Mutuma should be allowed the space to focus on delivering for the people without undue influence.
In a strongly worded statement, Makarina warned Mpuru against meddling in the county’s affairs, urging him to step back now that the primary mission of ousting the former governor had been accomplished. He noted that Mpuru’s interference was unsurprising, given his history of political involvement, and cautioned that he would soon face the consequences of his actions.
Makarina expressed concern that Mpuru might soon claim betrayal, a tactic he has been known for in past political engagements. He called on the legislator to shift his attention back to his constituency and serve his people instead of engaging in county politics. Further, he warned that continued interference could lead to political repercussions similar to the fate of the former governor.
The remarks came in response to a viral video in which Mpuru pledged unwavering support for Governor Mutuma, stating that his focus should be on delivering on his mandate rather than the 2027 General Election. He emphasized that all eyes were on the governor to see whether he would prioritize governance over future political ambitions.
Makarina advised Mutuma to remain steadfast in his leadership, ignoring propaganda that could derail his administration. He urged him to stay focused on his work, as misleading narratives could damage his reputation and influence in the county, particularly as the next election approached.
Mutuma M’Ethingia officially assumed office as governor on March 17, 2025, following the successful impeachment of his predecessor. His ascension was in line with constitutional provisions, allowing the deputy governor to take over leadership after an impeachment.
During his swearing-in ceremony, held at Mwendantu Grounds, he addressed thousands of residents, pledging to lead with integrity and dedication. He expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him and reassured the people that he would not betray their confidence. He emphasized unity and service delivery, making it clear that his administration would focus on realistic goals rather than unattainable promises.
Mutuma acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained committed to providing servant leadership, fostering cohesion, and ensuring collective progress for the county. He called on all stakeholders to work together toward a prosperous future.
Before assuming the governorship, Mutuma had served as Meru’s Deputy Governor, having been elected as an independent candidate alongside the former governor in the 2022 General Election. Their ticket won decisively, defeating established political figures.
Mutuma brings a background in religious leadership, having served in the Methodist Church of Kenya, where he held various leadership roles. His governance approach is influenced by his faith and ethical principles. Additionally, he has an extensive career in the Kenya Prisons Service, where he advanced from a junior officer to a senior position. In his role as a Human Rights Officer, he championed reforms that improved inmates’ rights and living conditions, particularly through the Inmate Rehabilitation Programme.
With his new role, he has pledged to steer Meru toward growth and development, prioritizing the needs of its residents while maintaining a firm commitment to ethical leadership.
