Malawi reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including the Moroccan Sahara region. This declaration was formalized on Thursday in Rabat, through a joint statement signed by Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
The statement underscores Malawi’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, aligning with Rabat’s consistent efforts to bolster its territorial claims. Tembo commended the increasing international support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the only credible, serious, and realistic pathway toward resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, introduced in 2007, offers autonomy to the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty. The initiative has gained traction internationally as a pragmatic approach to a conflict that has persisted for decades. Malawi’s endorsement adds to the growing momentum, further legitimizing Morocco’s efforts on the global stage.
Nancy Tembo lauded the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, highlighting the diplomatic momentum he has spearheaded in advocating for the Autonomy Plan. Under the King’s guidance, Morocco has engaged extensively with African nations and the broader international community to build consensus around its vision for the Sahara.
The statement also emphasized Malawi’s recognition of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a lasting and practical resolution to the Sahara issue. This aligns with the UN’s efforts to mediate the conflict through negotiations and dialogue, encouraging cooperation among all parties involved.
Malawi’s position reflects a broader shift within Africa, where more nations are voicing support for Morocco’s sovereignty and its Autonomy Plan. This solidarity aligns with Rabat’s vision of African unity and cooperation, as emphasized in its foreign policy priorities.
This development strengthens the diplomatic bond between Malawi and Morocco, reinforcing their shared commitment to upholding international norms and fostering regional stability. It also signals Morocco’s continued success in securing African backing for its territorial claims, positioning itself as a leader in diplomatic engagement across the continent.
By standing firmly with Morocco, Malawi underscores the importance of solidarity and mutual respect in addressing regional disputes, setting an example for collaborative conflict resolution in Africa.
