President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the passing of Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, describing him as a brilliant constitutional lawyer and a steadfast defender of human rights. Nowrojee passed away on Saturday morning in the United States at the age of 84.
Ruto hailed Nowrojee as a “decorated constitutional lawyer and veteran defender of human rights,” whose legacy is deeply etched in Kenya’s journey toward democracy. “He was universally respected for his principled commitment to the advancement of democracy, protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, and the promotion of constitutionalism and the rule of law,” said the President. He noted that the country had lost a “brilliant legal mind” who was admired for his graciousness, intellect, and solidarity with the common citizen.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also paid tribute, calling Nowrojee “a chess master of the courts,” and one of the most intellectually gifted lawyers Kenya has ever had. “Humble to a fault, the towering veteran of the courts was an intellectual who lived a simple life and interacted respectfully with all, even the most junior members of the legal profession or judiciary,” Kindiki said.
Chief Justice Martha Koome remembered Nowrojee as an icon of the Kenyan Bar and a towering figure in the legal and constitutional development of the nation. “He stood with courage during Kenya’s darkest times, using the law as a shield for the vulnerable and a sword against injustice,” Koome stated, emphasizing his deep belief in the transformative potential of the Constitution.
Nowrojee’s legacy extends beyond courtrooms. He was the convener and spokesperson of the National Convention Executive Council (NCEC), and chaired the Asian African Heritage Trust, championing diplomacy, peace, and education.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Faith Odhiambo described him as a man of poise and integrity, whose life was dedicated to justice and public service.
Nowrojee is remembered as a gentle giant and a symbol of Kenya’s enduring fight for democracy, justice, and human dignity. His legacy will continue to inspire generations within and beyond the legal profession.
