His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V formally assumed his role as the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community in a historic Accession Ceremony held at the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon, Portugal. This significant event followed the passing of his predecessor, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV.
The Accession Ceremony was a solemn yet momentous occasion that included religious recitations, the presentation and donning of the insignia of office, and the pledging of spiritual allegiance by Ismaili leaders representing their global community. The event was observed by Ismailis around the world through a livestream broadcast in their Jamatkhanas, spanning over 35 countries.
In his inaugural address, Aga Khan V paid tribute to his late father, acknowledging his profound legacy and contributions to both the Ismaili community and global humanitarian efforts. He also expressed gratitude to the governments of Portugal and Egypt for their dignified handling of his father’s funeral and burial.
His speech emphasized key values of the Ismaili Muslim faith, underscoring the balance between worldly and spiritual obligations. He reiterated his commitment to the well-being of the Ismaili Jamat and pledged to continue the work of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which has played a crucial role in socio-economic development across numerous regions.
