Kenyan political heavyweights have united in support of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position, as he prepares for a high-stakes election on Saturday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Raila, a veteran politician known for his Pan-African ideals and commitment to democracy, faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s former Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Randriamandrato.
In a remarkable show of unity, both allies and former rivals have backed Raila’s candidacy, marking a rare moment in Kenya’s deeply divided political landscape. President William Ruto, once Raila’s fiercest political adversary, has been at the forefront of his campaign, rallying support from across Africa. Meanwhile, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula have also thrown their weight behind Raila, emphasizing his credentials as the best candidate to lead the AU.
Kalonzo, Kenya’s de facto opposition leader, described Raila as “the most consequential statesman of our times,” praising his resilience in advocating for democracy. “Raila’s vision for our beloved continent resonates with Africans both at home and abroad,” Kalonzo stated. He added that Raila’s ability to forgive and engage even with past adversaries showcases his leadership qualities.
Gachagua, who once led Kenya Kwanza’s fierce opposition against Raila in the 2022 general elections, also endorsed him, highlighting his vast experience and ability to unify Africa. “There is no doubt about Raila’s worldview and his commitment to championing the interests of African people,” Gachagua wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He stressed that Raila is the right leader to bridge the Anglophone-Francophone divide within the AU.
Wetang’ula echoed similar sentiments, stating that Raila’s leadership would drive Africa toward greater unity and prosperity. “His dedication to Pan-Africanism and regional integration makes him the ideal candidate for the AUC chairmanship,” he said. Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni also expressed confidence in Raila’s ability to lead the AU.
As Raila prepares for the critical vote, he enjoys unprecedented bipartisan backing, reinforcing his credibility as a continental statesman. His election would mark a historic moment for Kenya and Africa, signaling a shift towards unity in regional politics. However, with two strong contenders also vying for the seat, the final decision rests in the hands of the 49 heads of state convening for the AU Summit.
