Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Catholic members of Parliament, visited the residence of the Apostolic Nunciature in Nairobi to offer his heartfelt condolences following the death of Pope Francis. The Pope passed away on April 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of peace, compassion, and social justice that resonated across the globe.
In a post shared on his X account, Raila expressed his deep sympathy, saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with the Catholic church fraternity across the globe. May the Almighty grant mercy to Pope Francis for his good and uplifting deeds on earth.” Raila went on to describe the Pope as a beacon of peace and an advocate for a peaceful society, qualities that defined his papacy and earned him admiration worldwide.
Wetang’ula also shared his condolences on social media, describing Pope Francis as a symbol of humility and compassion. He highlighted the Pope’s unwavering dedication to serving God and humanity, emphasizing his advocacy for the poor, his pursuit of peace, and his call for unity. Wetang’ula added, “Through his words and actions, he embodied Christ’s teachings of love, mercy, and forgiveness, championing the dignity of every human being, regardless of race, nationality, or status.”
In a separate tribute, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed his sympathy for the global Catholic community, acknowledging the void Pope Francis leaves behind. He remembered the Pope’s visit to Kenya during his papacy, noting that his prayers for the nation would always be cherished.
The funeral for Pope Francis will take place on Saturday at 10 AM local time in the Vatican, where dignitaries, including US President Donald Trump and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, are expected to attend. The funeral will be a simpler affair than previous papal funerals, in line with the Pope’s wish to be remembered as a humble disciple of Christ rather than a powerful man of the world.
Pope Francis’s passing marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, and his contributions to faith, peace, and social justice will continue to inspire millions worldwide.
