Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula recently held a crucial meeting with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss the ongoing peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Obasanjo, one of the key figures facilitating the peace talks, is working alongside other prominent African leaders, including Kenya’s Fourth President Uhuru Kenyatta, South Africa’s Kgalema Motlanthe, Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde, and the Central African Republic’s Catherine Samba-Panza. Their collaborative efforts aim to de-escalate tensions and restore stability to the conflict-ridden Great Lakes region.
Reflecting on his extensive involvement in African peace initiatives, Obasanjo shared insights from decades of mediation efforts, dating back to the 1960s. He emphasized the continuity of the challenges in the region, stating, “It was the same problem we are dealing with now, we must find a solution.” His experience underscores the need for persistent diplomatic engagement to address the complexities of regional conflicts.
Wetangula, a seasoned diplomat with a deep understanding of international relations, also highlighted the importance of sustained peace efforts. Drawing from his own experiences, Wetangula reflected on his role in the DRC peace process, particularly his collaboration with the late Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa in 2009 to promote dialogue and reconciliation. Noting the ongoing challenges, Wetangula remarked, “The same problem is persisting 14 years later.”
He further commended the African-led peace initiatives, stressing that homegrown diplomacy is vital for resolving the DRC conflict. “It is only through high-level mediation and collective political will that we can secure enduring peace and development for our people,” Wetangula emphasized, reinforcing the importance of regional solidarity.
This high-level meeting comes at a time when calls for increased cooperation, humanitarian response, and African unity are growing louder. Wetangula’s continued involvement in shaping the continent’s diplomatic efforts highlights his commitment to peace and stability across Africa.
