National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has emphasized the need for greater collaboration among East African Community (EAC) legislative bodies to accelerate regional integration. Speaking in his capacity as President of the Bureau of EAC Speakers, Wetang’ula reaffirmed his commitment to fostering regional unity, legislative harmony, and economic growth.
During a courtesy call by East African Community Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul, who also oversees Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and Regional Development, Wetang’ula urged the Ministry of EAC, ASALs, and Regional Integration to work closely with the Bureau of EAC Speakers. He stressed that collaboration was essential to resolving the persistent challenges hindering the full realization of EAC integration.
“The elusive regional integration of the East African Community can be achieved through greater collaboration among the Bureau of Speakers to push necessary legislation,” Wetang’ula stated. He highlighted the importance of ironing out policy inconsistencies and removing trade barriers to enhance intra-regional cooperation.
The discussions centered on strengthening ties among EAC partner states, with a focus on deeper regional unity, policy alignment, and economic collaboration. Wetang’ula reiterated his commitment to bolstering parliamentary cooperation within the bloc, urging for the Bureau of EAC Speakers to be elevated into a more influential regional entity. He argued that enhanced legislative coordination would be instrumental in driving the integration agenda forward.
Key areas of concern raised during the meeting included trade restrictions, the need for harmonized laws across member states, and the establishment of robust institutional frameworks to support regional governance. Wetang’ula emphasized the necessity of removing trade barriers, improving cross-border infrastructure, and implementing policies that facilitate the free movement of people and goods within the EAC.
Kenya, he noted, remains steadfast in its support for the EAC’s success and is committed to advancing economic and social transformation within the region. He called on partner states to work together in overcoming obstacles and ensuring that the vision of a fully integrated East African Community is realized.
The meeting underscored the critical role of legislative bodies in shaping the future of the EAC, with Wetang’ula advocating for sustained dialogue and cooperation to address challenges and unlock the region’s full economic potential.
