President William Ruto has attended the burial of George Oduor, a long-time aide to opposition leader Raila Odinga, at Ramba High School in Siaya County. George, who passed away on April 2, 2025, was a prominent figure in opposition politics and had served as Raila Odinga’s personal bodyguard and aide for decades.
Present at the emotional event were key political figures, including Raila Odinga, who spoke highly of George’s dedication and loyalty. In his tribute, Raila described George as a man of impeccable character innocent, sincere, generous, and trustworthy. According to Raila, George’s connection with the family began long before he became his bodyguard in 1995, as he had been part of the youth group that provided security to pro-democracy leaders, including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and FORD leaders.
Raila reflected on George’s resilience during tumultuous political times. Despite facing imprisonment during the 1997 general elections and being arrested and held for nearly a year at Kamiti Maximum Prison, George remained steadfast in his principles. His involvement in the “No Reforms, No Elections” campaign led to his wrongful detention, yet he bore the hardship with quiet dignity.
One of George’s notable moments in history was escorting Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s body from Nairobi to Bondo after the latter’s death in 1994. Even during this emotionally charged moment, George’s composure and respect were evident, qualities that defined his entire life.
Raila Odinga also spoke of George’s later role as his personal aide, emphasizing that his duties went beyond physical protection. George’s loyalty, discretion, and sense of service made him an integral part of Raila’s life, not just as a bodyguard but as a trusted confidant.
As George Oduor Nyangira is laid to rest, his legacy of loyalty, humility, and selfless service to his leaders and the nation will be remembered by all who knew him. His death marks the end of an era in the political history of Kenya.
