President William Ruto on Tuesday, July 16, chaired a Cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi, where key issues of national and regional importance were discussed. The session marked the first attendance for newly appointed Cabinet Secretaries Hanna Cheptumo (Gender) and Geoffrey Ruku (Public Service), who joined other top government officials in deliberations on pressing matters.
Among the top agenda items was Kenya’s ongoing diplomatic and humanitarian engagement in the Sudan conflict. The Cabinet expressed deep concern over the continued hostilities in Sudan, reiterating Kenya’s commitment to peacebuilding efforts in the region. President Ruto emphasized that Kenya would not remain passive while lives were being lost and regional stability was threatened.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was also present, lending weight to the government’s position on the matter. A statement read by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored Kenya’s active role in mediation efforts, calling on all warring factions in Sudan to prioritize dialogue over violence.
“As the conflict remains unresolved, it will continue to concern the region and the world at large, and Kenya will not remain passive. Kenya, therefore, urges key players in the conflict to find a pathway to peaceful resolution and end the bloodletting,” the statement noted.
The Cabinet acknowledged that the Sudanese conflict poses significant humanitarian and security risks to neighboring countries, and stressed that the international community must act decisively. “Indeed, the international community has a duty under the UN Charter to protect human life, property and help silence the guns,” the statement continued.
President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to supporting diplomatic channels and consular missions aimed at restoring peace in Sudan. The Cabinet also discussed strategies for reinforcing Kenya’s foreign policy on peace and security across the Horn of Africa.
This meeting reflects the Ruto administration’s intent to assert Kenya’s role as a regional peace broker and highlights the government’s readiness to confront both domestic and international challenges through diplomacy and collaboration.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Kenya calls for global support to end the violence and foster long-term stability in Sudan.
