President William Ruto on Friday chaired the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting at State House, Nairobi, urging lawmakers to prioritize national interests over political affiliations. The meeting brought together Members of Parliament and leaders allied with the ruling coalition as Kenya Kwanza prepares to formalize a working agreement with Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
During the meeting, Ruto emphasized the need for unity and collaboration in advancing the country’s development agenda. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to putting the welfare of Kenyans above political differences and called on legislators to work together for the country’s prosperity.
“This is the time to put Kenya and the people ahead of any other consideration. We will work together, our political inclinations notwithstanding, to take our country forward. Kenya, and the people, must succeed,” Ruto stated.
The expected agreement between Kenya Kwanza and ODM marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape. While the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, analysts suggest it could lead to greater political stability and bipartisan cooperation in addressing pressing national issues.
The move comes amid efforts to build consensus on governance matters, including economic recovery, security, and constitutional reforms. It also follows weeks of speculation about growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Raila Odinga’s ODM party, traditionally the main opposition force, has signaled openness to working with the government to ensure effective governance. This partnership could lead to enhanced legislative collaboration, potentially easing the passage of crucial bills in Parliament.
However, the move has also sparked debate within both political camps. Some Kenya Kwanza allies question the long-term implications of partnering with ODM, while sections of the opposition express concerns about the independence of their party’s agenda.
Despite differing views, the push for unity appears to be gaining momentum, with Ruto’s administration keen on fostering national cohesion. The signing of the agreement, expected in the coming days, will set the stage for a new chapter in Kenya’s political dynamics, with potential far-reaching impacts on governance and policy implementation.
