President William Ruto is set to wrap up his week-long tour of the Mt. Kenya region on Saturday, with key visits to Kiambu and Nyeri counties. The tour, which began on April 1, marks his first visit to the region in six months, following the impeachment of his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. The tour has spanned several counties, including Meru, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Murang’a, and Embu, where the President has been met with a warm reception despite initial concerns of potential hostility.
During his visit to Kiambu, Ruto will inspect the ongoing construction of the Mau Mau Roads at Nyanduma in Lari and review government projects, such as the Githunguri County Integrated Industrial Park and cold room installations at various markets. He will also assess affordable housing projects in the county. The President’s visit is notable due to the region’s political dynamics, with Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, a fierce critic of Ruto, hailing from the area. Wamuchomba has been vocal in her opposition to the government, aligning herself with Gachagua’s camp. However, Ruto has strengthened his ties with the county, appointing former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo as ICT Cabinet Secretary and gaining support from key leaders like Governor Kimani Wamatangi.
Ruto’s visit to Nyeri will include the launch of an affordable housing project in Ruringu, Nyeri Town Constituency, and the commissioning of a fresh produce market in Othaya Constituency. The tour has been widely seen as a success, with Ruto assuring the people of Mt. Kenya that he remains committed to their development and interests.
During the tour, Ruto also addressed the ongoing political rift with his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, claiming that no one can sever his long-standing bond with the Mt. Kenya region. Ruto emphasized his two-decade-long relationship with the region, stating that no individual could break the trust he has built with the people.
