Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service and unwavering commitment to his people. President William Ruto led the nation in mourning the late senator, describing him as a “progressive leader” who tirelessly worked for the transformation of Baringo County.
In a heartfelt message of condolence, President Ruto emphasized Cheptumo’s devotion to public service and his relentless efforts to improve the lives of his constituents. “The Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa,” Ruto stated.
The Speaker of the Senate, Amason Kingi, expressed profound shock and grief upon learning of Cheptumo’s passing at Nairobi Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. Kingi lauded the late senator as a committed leader who took his legislative responsibilities seriously and championed the cause of devolution.
“The Senate of Kenya has lost a leader who firmly believed in devolution and used every opportunity to advance its cause and the welfare of Kenyans,” Kingi said. “I join his family, the people of Baringo County, and Kenyans in mourning a great leader and pray that God grants us all grace and fortitude to bear this monumental loss. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah also paid tribute, noting that Cheptumo’s steadfast dedication to public service and exemplary leadership would be remembered for years to come. “During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Baringo County. May they find strength and comfort in the cherished memories of his impactful life and legacy,” he said.
Cheptumo, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party member, was elected as the senator for Baringo County in the 2022 General Election, where he ousted longtime political rival and Kanu party chairman, Gideon Moi. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North from 2008 to 2022.
His career also spanned legal work, having previously served as a legal officer for the Central Bank of Kenya and the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation. Throughout his time in public office, Cheptumo remained a vocal advocate for the development of Baringo and the empowerment of its people.
As Kenya mourns his loss, the late senator’s contributions to governance, lawmaking, and community service will undoubtedly leave a lasting imprint on the nation’s history. His dedication to his constituents and commitment to the country’s progress will continue to inspire future leaders.
