President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that no forceful evictions will be carried out in the country until affected families are provided with suitable alternatives. Addressing residents and traders in Ruai underpass, Chokaa, Kayole Junction, and Njiru Stage in Nairobi, Ruto acknowledged the ongoing land disputes that have left many families at risk of displacement.
“The government is aware of land disputes in many parts of the country, including Nairobi County. As we seek to resolve these challenges, no eviction will be carried out until the affected families are provided with alternatives,” Ruto assured.
This statement comes amid growing concerns over potential evictions of thousands of families in Njiru. The Environment and Lands Court recently ruled that 1,000 acres of contested land in the area belongs to the Kirima family. However, the family has previously expressed willingness to sell the land to the current occupants under a willing-buyer, willing-seller arrangement, allowing them to obtain legitimate title deeds.
The President’s commitment follows similar cases where families have been rendered homeless due to unresolved land disputes. Last year, residents of Nyama Villa Estate in Kayole faced demolitions after failing to reach an agreement with the landowner.
Ruto made these remarks as part of his development tour in Nairobi County, which has seen him commission and inspect several key projects aimed at improving infrastructure, water supply, and education.
