President William Ruto has pledged to do everything within his power to ensure that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is accorded the respect he deserves both locally and internationally. Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday during the signing of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) framework agreement, Ruto emphasized the importance of recognizing Raila’s contributions to Kenya’s political landscape.
Reflecting on his past association with Raila in ODM, President Ruto underscored that Raila’s influence has shaped Kenya’s political arena across generations.
“Several months after the elections, I told him he has been my party leader, and I’d want him to be treated well. I will do whatever it takes to make sure he has respect in Kenya. I am not doing this for any selfish reasons; it is because he is my senior and his contributions deserve respect,” Ruto stated.
The President highlighted the significance of the agreement signed between UDA and ODM, noting that it symbolized a commitment to putting national interests above personal ambitions.
“This arrangement is not about sharing positions or winning elections; it is about Kenyans’ interests. It’s time we close ranks as a country,” he noted. “We haven’t made the steps and decisions that would make this country great because we have been making politically correct decisions.”
Ruto further praised Raila for his decision to vie for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, acknowledging the former prime minister’s long-standing contributions to Pan-Africanism. He expressed confidence in Raila’s ability to represent Kenya and Africa effectively on the global stage.
“I must congratulate Raila for the boldness and courage to make the decision for Kenya. Never before have Kenyans expressed deep and widespread yearning for positive change that leaves no one behind,” Ruto remarked.
The signing of the UDA-ODM framework agreement marks a new chapter in Kenya’s political landscape, signaling a shift towards unity and collaboration. It remains to be seen how this partnership will shape the country’s governance and political dynamics moving forward.
