Authorities have launched an investigation following the fatal shooting of a civilian by a Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officer at Kiptunga Forest in Kuresoi South on Tuesday evening. The incident, which has sparked concerns over the use of force by law enforcement officers, occurred during a routine patrol.
According to preliminary reports, two KFS officers encountered the civilian in possession of firewood within the state-protected forest. When the officers attempted to confiscate the firewood, the civilian allegedly brandished a knife and attempted to stab one of them. In response, the officer fired his weapon, fatally wounding the individual.
Following the incident, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kuresoi South took immediate action, recovering firearms from both KFS officers involved in the operation. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the use of lethal force was justified under the circumstances.
The shooting has reignited discussions on the enforcement of forestry laws and the rights of civilians. The Forest Conservation and Management Act of 2016 explicitly prohibits the felling, collection, burning, or injuring of forest produce within state-protected forests without proper authorization. However, human-wildlife conflict, economic hardship, and lack of alternative fuel sources have often pushed residents into forests in search of firewood.
Local leaders and human rights activists have called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served. “While we recognize the importance of protecting our forests, we must also consider the socio-economic realities that force individuals to depend on forest resources. The use of lethal force should always be a last resort,” stated a local community leader.
The Kenya Forest Service has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, the DCI has assured the public of a fair and transparent investigation, urging witnesses to come forward with any relevant information.
As the probe continues, the incident raises broader questions about the balance between environmental conservation and human livelihood needs, as well as the appropriate use of force by law enforcement officers. The findings of the investigation are expected to shed light on the circumstances leading to the tragic event and guide future enforcement protocols.
